NoRiders: Conceived by a Mother-of-Invention and Mother-of-Eight on Mother's Day!
Catherine Chetelat ("Cas") has earned the right to be called a true Mother-of-Invention. Having raised 8 children in a small row home in Baltimore, Maryland, she needed to be creative in every way possible to co-manage a household of six very energetic boys and two beautiful girls, as well as dogs, cats, rabbits, parakeets, snakes, chameleons, and other pets too numerous to mention. Her most memorable entrepreneurial endeavor was having her husband build a snowball stand in their back yard in order to "make money" during the summer months and to provide their children with something productive to do (i.e., to keep them out of trouble). While never really making a dime on this commercial effort, she did manage to accomplish something of far greater value - the development of an entrepreneurial spirit in her children.
On Mother's Day of 1992, Cas conceived her most enduring and practical invention of all. She became fed up with the annoyance and embarrassment she experienced as her favorite shorts kept riding up her inner thighs, and she decided to do something about it. Originally, she applied everything from Venetian blind slats, to plastic bottle strips to the inside of her shorts to stop them from riding up. Innovative, but not practical. Then, she visited a local fabric store and looked for whatever raw material she could use to do the job. She purchased some boning material, mending tape and fabric glue, and developed the original NoRiders Iron-on Patch.
In 1994, Cas' son, Michael, saw the makings of an affordable retail solution to a problem experienced by millions of men, women and children. He began to perform Internet and patent searches in order to assess both the viability and the marketability of such a unique product. In 1999, ProductMasters was incorporated to develop, manufacture, and sell all versions of and enhancements to the original product.
